Eketahuna lies just north of Mt Bruce (National Wildlife Centre) on Route 2 and is a friendly rural town notable for its Great Annual Bike Ride held every April with an 85 km, 45 km competitive ride and a 13 km family ride.

It has a picturesque well-maintained 18 hole golf course bordered on the western side by the Makakahi River. The fees are are $10 per round and the course has featured many times on TV One's The Golf Show.

You can cool off in the town swimming pool over the summer or enjoy a game of tennis on the astrofurf all weather court. There is an outdoor bowling Ccub and in the winter, games of rugby, soccer and hockey are played at the sports ground.

Follow the Heritage trail or check out the Eketahuna Museum and Historic Buildings in town. If your're into hiking or tramping there is a 20 minute cliff walk beside the Makakahi River and a longer tramp through the Putara Valley into the Tararua Ranges and Forest Park. This is also a popular place for hunting fishing and horse trekking.

There are two hotels in town and for a more personal touch farm/homestays all with reasonable rates. If you're a camper the camping ground is quiet and set in an attractive area of native bush on the banks of the Makakahi River.

The town is also serviced by an excellent general store with a full range of hardware, and service station and a tearooms
